Ply away home

I finally got around to plying my second round of drop spindle yarn.

The first time I plyed I used an awkward wrapping-yarn-around-hand technique as seen here:

Yes, my finger is purple. The spindle in the background is filled with yarn I had also plyed yesterday, but using a different method:

Essentially, I put two full spindles of spun yarn into cardboard boxes. I wrapped the two spun yarns over a hook (for tension), then plyed the two yarns with a another spindle.

I've already dyed the small left over yarn with kool aid, there'll be pictures tomorrow, once it dries.

Socks ahoy

I finished weaving in the ends mere hours ago. The one on the right was the first attempt at a skull, taken from drawing on graph paper, but I thought it looked a lot like a strange primate, so I went free form for the skull on the left.

On to the next project. argh

Finished wee sweater

So I decided to make the sweater "functional" by putting sleeves. At the last minute I added a picot edging, which I think is a nice touch.

Crochet baby sweater

The sweater was supposed to be for preemies, but it looks a tad big. Like the "decorative" button holes? As you can probably guess, I don't crochet often. I still have to slip stitch around the border, and the pattern says I should pick up at the sleeves to make the sweater, but I think it looks cute the way it is. We shall see ...

knee warmers

Not the most thrilling of projects, but it's functional (maybe). I think I might try and hand-felt the actual "knee" part.


The pirate socks are almost done, Noah tryed one on yesterday, and said it fit, so I just need to do the toe on the other one, and finish it off with some duplicate stitch.

More Yarn Dying

Can you guess what I used to dye this yarn? ....
Give up? The one on the right is beet, the one in the middle is dry mustard and tumeric, and the the on the left is pure tumeric.

For the beets I chopped up three of the roots, boiled them for a while, then drained the jiuce and put it into another pot with some vinegar. Then I let that simmer for a while, and left it overnight. In the morning the water was still very red, so I think three beets was probably a little overkill.

I would not recommend dying yarn with tumeric, it took so incredibly long to wash the powder off, I'm pretty sure there's still some specks left on the skein.

I'm not sure that to make with the yarn. It's not much, about 120 yards, so arm warmers might be the way to go.

Wee hat

A wee hat, modeled by the lovely Totoro.
The hat is to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
It's part of the Team in Training Program, and the person raising the money is looking for either yarn donations, or finished items. The first deadline is March 9th, and we have a basket for donations at the store.

It may not seem like it (only one person drinking, and two people knitting?), but here are a couple of pics from our Knitting Under the Influence Event.

We've decided to make every Last Friday of the month Happy Hour Knit, so if you missed this event, there'll be other opportunities to sip and knit.

Oscar the hat?

Since loosing the only scarf I made for myself and managed to keep, I decided it was high time I filled that lonely gap in my heart with a hat. I found some green encore and green furry yarn in my stash - perfect, I thought, for a hat. Nope. I've tried five maybe six times to make it look good. I've tried holding them together, alternating them every row, every other row. But no, it just ends up looking like like I killed Oscar the grouch and placed him on my head.

Star Wars

Two of my siblings are very into Star Wars, so my mother bought a year subscription to the science museum because they have a new Star Wars exhibit. Most of it was clothes and props from the movie, sometimes someone dressed up as a character from the movies would walk by.

A few models of real life robots and games involving magnets comprised the "learning" portion of the exhibit. What I learned: there was no knitting in Star Wars.

Yup, still working on the pirate socks.

sinister spindle

Our spin your own yarn class is tomorrow, and to commemorate I tried out the top-whorl spindle I got for Christmas (don't worry, not the same kind of spindle in Annie May's kit), only to find out that it wobbles! Woe.

I was able to spin some yarn, and the wobble wasn't that bad, as in it doesn't hit me in the liver whenever I give it a twirl.

Doesn't the spindle look sinister?

Grandma

My grandmother passed away on Saturday. She was having throat problems for a couple of years now, but two weeks ago she had another bad episode and went into the emergency room. She died two days after being moved to another hospital.

I wasn't able to finish her sweater in time.

If anyone would like to take over the knitting, I would be happy to give it to you. The night of her death I took the needles off the project, and placed it all in a bag. I know that if I try to work on it I'll just be reminded with every stitch how I'll never see her again.

It's nice yarn, it would be a shame for it to go to waste.

Dyed sweater

Here's my grandmother's sweater so far.

It's a cardigan, really. I'm planning on making the top of it a yoke (adding the sleeves to the body and knitting the rest in one piece). And no, I'm not gonna do a fairisle yoke, the variation of the skeins will probably be exciting enough. And yes, I do realize now that I have a light stripe. I tried switching between skeins for much of the sweater, but evidently I got bored. I'm wondering if I could a little dye directly on parts of that stripe, then microwaving it, a la kool aid style.

Dye Job

My first attempt at non-koolaid dyeing (I'll try and get a pic of the pink bunny slippers). The hope is that I'll dye and knit a sweater for my grandmother's birthday, January 14th.

I like the sound of deadlines as they woosh past.

We have a new yarn - recycled silk. oooh. It's even nice sideways.

Kool Aid Dye!

I'm making my little sister bunny slippers from Happy Hooker. I've decided to make it in white, then cool aid dye it pink.

Here's my first cool aid dye experiment, using Cherry flavor, though I think I'm going to use pink lemonade on the actual slippers.



We didn't have white vinegar at home, so I used apple cider vinegar.

I soaked the swatch in water first.

Then I mixed the vinegar and kool aid in a glass, put in the swatch, then microwaved it.

Suddenly the mixture boiled over, and I had to leave the room because of the smell.

I've since read that kool aid is already acidic, and vinegar isn't necessary. oh well

Stripe hat

My latest project.

It's for me. True, I do have Christmas presents and preemie hats and sweaters left to do, but I had a hat vision and had to make it.

I used 5 bobbins for the stripes, so there was much wrapping and tangling involved, but it fun.

2) I just had a baby and am looking for folks that are interested in knitting or crocheting baby items for me. I have the patterns. I would like hats, and stockings. Something of a fairly good quality (although it doesn’t hv to be cashmere of course!) but something that will last for years to come and can be passed on to his own children someday.
There are also so many items that I want hand-knitted for him. I hv saved many pics of items that I like, especially knit dolls. Sock monkey style!?

What's next

I finished the shawl! yay. It's too dark to take an adequate picture right now, but I should be able to take one by Wed.

Next on my list is a drop stitch scarf with ribbon yarn. We sold the previous store sample, so I'm making another one.

After that I'll finally be able to work on my growing list of presents and gifts.

I'm also going to try and make before Friday night a hat for Knitzilla. Why Friday - a representative from the group will be at the store on Saturday for our charity knitting day. I'm thinking of a black hat with red diagonal stripes. We'll see.

The Christmas presents I'll need to make are a mobius head shawl, possibly with the outback mohair and Noah's pirate socks (half done), and a slew of bookmarks to stick in a few Christmas cards. Jessamy wants bed socks, slippers, and a hat, but she's going to be in SF for Christmas, and last year we just had late Christmas with her.

My sister asked for a sweater. Fortunately her birthday's in mid January, so if I shoot for having it done by Christmas, it should be able to finish it by mid January.

Charity Knitalong

Hi all.

The holidays are a season for giving, so why not use your knit and crochet skills for charity.

Here's the deal:

Charity hat done

I just finished the template for my preemie Stitches from the Heart hats.

I used DK weight yarn, and size 5 DP needles.
Here's the pattern - CO 50, work in k1, p1 rib for 4 rows. Work 8 rows in stockinette.

Decrease as follows:
Row 1: *k5, k2tog*, repeat from *, ending with k1.
Row 2: *k4, k2 tog*, repeat from *, ending with k1.
Row 3: *k3, k2 tog*, repeat from *, ending with k1.
Row 4 and all subsequent rows: *k2, k2 tog*, repeat from *, ending with k1.
Stop decreasing when you have 9 stitches left. Cut end, bring end through the 9 stitches, weave in ends.

Look we're famous!

Begone with you

Got an email a few days ago about a call for unfinished knitting projects, to be used as set pieces for a play.

So I dug up my first attempt at a scarf.







Yes, it does have a cable down the middle. But, it also has crossed stitches, new yarn joined in the middle of a row, and I thought two skeins would be enough for a scarf.

I briefly considered keeping it for sentimental reasons, but seeing as I don't actually remember knitting it, that excuse wouldn't work. Plus, I'm genetically predisposed to hord crap, and although I'm doing pretty good at the moment in terms of stuffage, this scarf just might be the gateway garment. Next thing you know, I'm 70 years old and still holding on to my gauge swatches afghan squares.

If anyone wants to share postage, bring your knitting to the store, affixed with all the necessary info.

WHY UNFINISHED KNITTING?
“Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” originally
set out to explore the sky-high rates of mental
illness and suicide among Asian Pacific Islander
Women. Asian Pacific Islander American women have the
highest rates of suicide in the country in a statistic
that seems to be widely unpublicized and often
disregarded. The unfinished knitting collected
represent incomplete intentions, women’s work,“spinning a yarn,” and loneliness. During the show,
Kristina uses the knitting pieces to represent
“unravelling” women and even unravels some of the
pieces during the show. These knit pieces may also be
displayed as part of an art installation later in the
run.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING:
Please include the skein of yarn (if there is one)
attached to your unfinished knitting. Include the
knitting needle it’s sitting on, or if you want to
keep you needles, pull some waste yarn through the
loops so that your piece doesn’t unravel in the mail.

On a sheet of paper please include the following
information. This information is all optional as it
may be displayed as part of a public installation of
this work.

I've done another bookmark, this one in a drop stitch pattern.

I'm also making a shawl (on commision). It's ribbing with small needles, so I'll be doing this one for a while ...

Quick Bookmark

For about a year now my grandmother has been telling us we should do bookmarks because they are fast and easy. So last night I put aside my socks and made some quick 1 hour bookmarks using cotton thread, #2s and a simple yo, k2tog pattern.

Apparently this mixture really shows off uneven tension, but I still like it.


This was my second one (the first is already in a book), and a third of a different pattern is on the needle.

Not much knitting, but...

I was pleased to find out that The Nipple Project is extending it's deadline to Spring 2007.

As much fun as it seems it'll have to be a post-Christmas project for me.

pirate socks

I decided to do Noah's pirate socks at the same time. A good decision, I think.

I'm going to dupicate stitch the skull onto the big black stripe. Sure, the skull is going to be a little further down than one would expect, but I don't think it will ruin the effect.

Parrots

Becca from Sugarbutterbex and I are at the Highland Park Farmers Market every Tuesday from 3 - 7. We have crafts available for kids, sometimes simply some paper and markers, or a special treat, like last week's sugar skulls (man, was that messy).

Early on in the afternoon we were greeted with a cacophony of squaks. There's a lot of speculation as to LA and other cities have their own parrot flock. I don't pretend to know which rumor is true, but I do know they are loud.

For several months the parrots used to wake me up in the morning (the opposum is still around, by the way), but about 6 months they moved on. I had always assumed the flock consisted of 15, maybe 20 parrots. But this flock had to have had at least 50 parrots. It was a bizarre sight. Maybe I'll see them again next week.

So the haircut wasn't so much a chop chop as a snip snip.

I almost always dislike haircuts at first, I think there's only been one exception. With this one, I like the layered bangs,

not so sure about the mullett. I hope you appreciate the picture, it took about 6 tries to get a shot that wasn't just my hand or my shirt.

Sure, the mullet was big in Japan a few years ago, and if I were to judge Japan's haircut trends by those three girls in H&M yesterday, it still is. But I'm not really sure it's my thing. Lets see how I feel tomorrow.

You might be wondering why I haven't been posting any of my knitting projects. Well, that's because I don't really have any. I'm waiting for my yarn (dreambaby DK) to come in for pair of socks and superwash (cleckheaton) for a hooded capelet/poncho thing. So really, I've just been messing around with short rows and lace, trying to figure out what pattern I want the capelet to be, it's not really postable material since I rip it out immediately.

I'm going to have a booth today at the Highland park Farmer's Market (goldline station) stop by and say hi.

Chop Chop

I'm gonna get my hair cut tomorrow. yay. Not that I'm really looking forward to sitting in a highchair and awkwardly staring at myself and the hairstylist in the mirror for three hours. But, a change would be nice. I still don't know how I want it cut, so I guess we'll all be surprised tomorrow.
